Nourishing and maintaining balance within ourselves is not only an integral link to the wellspring of living a healthy & vibrant life, but also unlocks a deeper connection to the sacred feminine. Bajos, or vaginal steams, is a safe, soothing & sensual way to invite the essence of healing into the seat of creativity ~ our wombs.
Vaginal steaming is a beautiful ritual for connecting oneself to the feminine wisdom that abides within and can assist in relieving stagnant or deficient conditions within the vagina, womb & entire reproductive system. These conditions include menstrual cramping, amennorhea, dysmennorhea, uterine prolapse, incontinence, bacterial imbalances, implantation challenges, postpartum healing and many more. Because vaginal steams encourage an increase in vitality and circulation, they are beneficial for delivering elevated sensations during lovemaking and greater awareness of feelings, both physical and emotional, that flow from the womb. Vaginal steams rejuvenate the reproductive system by warming the organs, increasing circulation of oxygenated blood to the vagina and womb and restoring moisture and vitality to the tissues. The soothing heat opens the pores of the tissues, as well as the vagina, carrying the vapor of healing properties and volatile oils of the herbs into the bloodstream to be released deep within the pelvis & womb.

The Ritual of Steaming
by Sophia Rose of La Abeja Herbs
Place one cup of dried herbs in a large metal
or sturdy glass bowl & cover with 1 quart of water.
Leave the bowl outside beneath the Moon at night and then bring the
herbs to a low simmer in a pot on the stove the following morning.
If you wish, you can skip the step above and simply pour boiling water over
the herbs and cover. Allow the herbs to steep for about ten minutes.
Take this time to offer a prayer of thanks for the herbs, talking to them
if you wish, and asking them for their help with whatever specific
healing or guidance you may need. A simple prayer of gratitude to
honor the gift of the plants is just fine too.
Once the herbs have cooled a bit, position yourself over them and test the
temperature of the steam. It should be very warm but in no way unpleasant.
If it is too hot, allow the herbs to cool for a few minutes and then return to the steam.
Please take care not to burn the delicate tissues of your vagina with too-hot steam.
Place the bowl of herbs either inside a steaming stool, beneath a chair with slats in it, or
in a clean toilet bowl with the water turned off on the pipes. If it is comfortable for you,
you may also simply squat over the bowl or pot filled with herbs. The steaming stool seems
the most pleasant and natural option as it allows you to squat slightly, relax fully, and open
yourself deeply to the experience in all ways. Whatever method you choose, make sure that
you are warm and that the steam is contained by wrapping your lower half in a towel or blanket.
Heavy socks and your favorite sweater are recommended in Autumn & Winter.
While you invite the steam into your womb, take time to just be. Allow your mind to wander.
Bring your attention to your breath. Place your hands on your breasts, your belly, your heart.
Listen to whatever messages arise within you, noticing each thought and sensation and honoring
them all as valuable information.
The steam will generally last about twenty minutes the plants exhaust their medicine.
When you feel satisfied that the experience is complete, wrap yourself in a blanket or
put on warm clothing. Do not allow yourself to become chilled. Rest and allow yourself
to soak in the experience fully. Pay attention to any insights you have or messages you
receive during this time. Place your hands over your womb and notice the sensations
Always return the herbs to the earth
and give thanks for the healing and
nourishment they have provided.
For General Use: As part of an overall self-care regime, it is recommended that you steam 2-3 times per month, always during weeks in which you are not menstruating. If you suffer from pain, bloating or exhaustion during menses, you should steam 2-3 times within the week before menstruation. For those experiencing fertility challenges, steam once a week and twice during pre-ovulation, to make sure that the tissue is moist and cervical fluids are clear & copious. Expect to steam for 3 months before seeing results. If you are experiencing or have passed menopause, steaming at least 4 times a year, during the seasonal changes is beneficial but one may steam as often as feels right.
For Postpartum: In many traditions of holistic midwifery care a vaginal steam is given within the first 9 days after childbirth. It is best to wait until day 3, but can be just a beneficial at day 6, 9 or even at 6 weeks postpartum. In cases of extreme bleeding or hemorrhaging, vaginal steaming is contraindicated. If you had a cesarean birth, you should wait until 8 weeks postpartum to engage in vaginal steaming. There is not a point at which it is too late, as you will receive the benefits any time you decide to steam. You may engage in a vaginal steam up to three times per week for four weeks to facilitate healing and toning of the uterus and vagina (please be sure there are no open wounds or stitches and that you are no longer bleeding).
Safety: Do not engage in vaginal steaming during menses, if you are pregnant or possibility of pregnancy, wear an IUD, have any open sores or blisters or have any type of internal infection (cervical, uterine or ovarian inflammation), or fever. Consult your healthcare provider if you have any concerns prior to vaginal steaming. You should not experience any pain during or after steaming, but should this be the case please seek medical advice. For external use only.
Please do not add or use essential oils in steaming herbs, as they are far too strong for this purpose and has the potential to cause serious damage.
